satire, social commentary, short nonfiction and short fiction. the occasional rant. i am telling a number of stories at the same time really, and refer to them not in any particular context, order, or relative meaning.
The Eyewitness and the Scientist
sitting in english literature class in 11th grade and listening to the teacher dictate the conclusions we were supposed to come to, listening to the class discussion overlooking so many things and not questioning what the authorities were questioning, their conclusions, their methods, it all made me distrustful of the eyewitness. following courtroom proceedings, congressional hearings, reading newspaper accounts and always wondering why this or that question wasn’t asked, why the witnesses each saw different things, how the concluders concluded differently, how the professors were constantly bickering… and all the meanwhile teachers and the top of the class wondering why this stupid idiot (me) wouldn’t just listen and do what he was told- that is what all led me to never ever EVER trust in the observations and conclusions of ANYONE but myself. i dont give a shit if you are a professional. think i am an idiot for not agreeing with you. i could give a fuck about that. i am, however, disheartened at arrogant stupidity.
the reason it is a joke to see some scientist belittle the supernatural is the FACT that there is no scientific method to ascertain the supernatural. science is preoccupied with materialistic observation. period. it has no business conjecturing about the supernatural. here is an example, the mothman. a woman came face to face with this creature and was so frightened of it she dropped to the ground in terror and couldn’t move, risking smothering her infant. when she was able to regain her composure she ran inside where her and another witness saw the mothman walking around on the porch and peering in inquisitively into the windows.
now, how does science tackle the phenomenon of the mothman? looks for some “logical” explanation. the best they could come up with is that it was a heron. a FUCKING HERON!!! seriously. this thing had been sighted by dozens of credible witnesses and hundreds of not so credible ones. the point is, a six foot tall creature with the physique of a man, no, you didn’t see the physique of a man, you saw a heron. that is in actuality the reverse of how the human mind functions. the human mind will fill in the details and therefor fill it in as a bird if it remotely resembled one. the fact that the mind could not is what caused cognitive dissonance and put the woman in a state of shock. now, lets ask the question “if a bird stood six foot tall how far would its beak stick away from its face?” you see, a heron has a very long beak. a six foot tall heron would therefore have an unmistakenable beak. no witness would say “I dont recall” if asked whether she saw a beak on the creature. in fact, all of the witnesses were unable to fully describe the face.
one more before i let the scientist alone. this “bird” was reported by a pilot as flying over 70mph without flapping its wings. that’s right. it took off by simply spreading its wings and accelerating. this didn’t seem to matter to the scientist interviewed for a documentary as he explained that herons tend to “loft” in flight. AT 70MPH? now, if anyone thinks that the scientific explanation of a heron sounds more plausible than simply saying that what was seen remains a mystery to our material existence than there is a serious question of plausible deniability going on in their head. and the truth will never be known to them because they shut themselves off to comprehending it when it comes.
