one from out of pieces two from out of mud what comes of this thesis brands us with blood
one step mind two said why three steps in the forest of trees we left to die?
one course that’s true
one course that’s blind
one course that’s free
more courses to find
too much need
too much complacency
too many forces
to whet our dreams
with a lie with a word comes a cry with songs that fade from the mind that drop into the vortex into the wind into the sand and all that we thought we won was thought in the mind of one in the mud in the corral behind the fence and tumbleweeds pulled the reigns from our hands and dragged us across the sky pointing to burrows pointing to dust pointing to rain pointing in the dusk and the soot from the graves of inklings of our passion lie sunbaked on plains ploughed in futility. the captains and the majors shoot at stars and hide the criminals and the voices of devils slide from moonbeams and enter our ears with a glorious screech. onward we march to meetings to conventions and give phony greetings and stiff handshakes and we curse for awhile at the fortune of another write new books of legends of our race. we blame the kids for our troubles and pass on our greed leave them dumb and fearful and curse them for losing god. and the storming rain brought on by our will blasts the plains with a centuries long afterglow…
i can’t do this anymore. i can’t get up. i cannot prove myself to myself. pages turn but i am blind. i step on a corkscrew and rip my sole and nearby lies an arm. i guess it once belonged to someone. pages of gossip columns scatter as i approach. the dying voices of ego chatter still ring in my ear. a bloody dollar bill is caked to the pavement and bombed out arenas hide memories of plays that made the headlines that caused fist fights. and suddenly what comes to mind is that little box on my tax return every year asking me if i wish to give a dollar to finance some political campaign. i would be amused but i see tanks coming over the hill, i see drones gliding above and i don’t see anyone else for them to shoot at.
